Home favourite Luiten wins second Dutch title with final round of 63
The Dutchman started the day three shots adrift of overnight leader Scott Hend, but the Australian endured a hard final round and a two-over 73 saw him finish in a tie for fourth.
The home favourite became the first Dutch player to win the tournament twice since its introduction to the European Tour in 1972.
Wiesberger made his move up the leaderboard with three birdies in a four-hole stretch from the 12th, briefly holding pole position when Luiten found the water and dropped a shot at the 13th.
Home hero Joost Luiten fired a brilliant course-record equalling 63 to make history and win his second KLM Open at The Dutch.
Hend, who also held a one-shot lead heading into the final round of last weekend’s European Masters before settling for second, paid the price for consistency.
“The first one was special but this one very special”, said a delighted Luiten.
It has been an excellent 2016 for the 43-year-old who won the True Thailand Classic Presented by Chang in March and went on to represent his country at the Olympic Men’s Golf Competition.
The Aussie blotted his card with bogeys at the second and uncharacteristically at the par-five 15th hole to go along with his four birdies as he struggled for control of the tee all day.
South Korea’s Byeong-hun An was then third at 13 under after matching Austria’s Wiesberger with a 65, a shot ahead of Spaniard Alejandro Cañizares, English duo Ben Evans and David Horsey and Australia’s Scott Hend.
Chris Hanson was in the group at 11 under, a shot clear of fellow Englishmen Tommy Fleetwood and Simon Khan, and Scotland’s Scott Jamieson.
