Homecoming king passes crown to friend
He turned to his friend and team manager K.L. Norwood, knelt on one knee and presented him the crown.
Max Akin and KL Norwood have been friends since 5th grade.
Max Akin, the star quarterback at Fossil Ridge High in Fort Worth, Texas, made news last week, not because he won homecoming king but because he didn’t keep the crown for long.
The senior had just helped his team build a 26-6 halftime lead during its homecoming game against Saginaw last Friday night. Instead of accepting the crown, he gave it to K.L., who was also nominated.
KL Norwood is the football team’s manager and popular throughout school, but he can not play himself because he suffers from cerebral palsy.
“It was absolutely terrific”, Norwood said.
K.L.is the most positive person you’d ever meet.
Akin said he didn’t know the right time to do it, but he knew his friend wanted that crown more than anything.
One classmate even tweeted a video of the two swapping the crown with the caption, “I am actually crying”.
Fossil Ridge football coach Tony Baccarini was not surprised by Akin’s gesture.
Fossil Ridge went on to win 40-12. “They love each other, and that’s why we’re successful”.
“I thought it was the best hearing them chant K.L.’s name right after halftime, and I know he liked that, too”, Akin said.
