Homicide suspect escapes from Muskogee County Jail
Law enforcement officials blanketed Muskogee County Monday in their search for Newberry, but hadn’t been able to pin him down as of Monday night.
Muskogee County Deputies are searching for a man accused of murder after he escaped Sunday night.
Newberry is charged with murder in the fatal shooting of 88-year-old rancher Charley Kirk during a July burglary in Cherokee County, Oklahoma. When authorities learned of the missing semi, they contacted the company that owned the truck and found it could be tracked with a Global Positioning System unit.
Authorities said Newberry is considered armed and unsafe.
Newberry’s fellow escapee, Raymond Noriega, injured both of his heels in the jump from the roof.
They tried to steal the vehicle, but failed, Garvin said, so Noriega stayed inside the vehicle while Newberry fled.
Newberry had been in jail. He is being held without bond in the Williamson County Jail on an arrest warrant from Muskogee County.
The two prisoners escaped from the Muskogee County jail – about 60 miles southeast of Tulsa – around 10:30 p.m. Sunday by breaking through a four-level security window and going onto a roof, Administrator Jeremy Garvin of the Muskogee County Sheriff’s Office told ABC News.
Prior to Newberry’s escape, the case was scheduled for District Court arraignment on December 17.
The Muskogee County Sheriff’s Office said Newberry was taken into custody in Williams, Texas Tuesday morning.
