Honda Expands Takata Airbag Recall for Ridgeline
Thousands of Honda cars in Britain could be affected by a worldwide recall involving defective air bag inflators.
Honda said repairs and replacement for faulty parts will not be available until fall.
A spokesperson for Continental told Reuters that between 1.5 million and 2 million of the affected vehicles were sold in the us, but the company did not provide a listing of the vehicles. Once this happens, corrosion buildup causes a power failure and the airbags don’t deploy in a crash, or they could randomly deploy when the vehicle hasn’t been in an accident.
In January 2008, Continental conducted its first round of investigation when a malfunctioning air bag control system was removed from a Mercedes vehicle.
Honda says the 2008-2010 Honda Accords have airbags that can fail to deploy in a crash, something that has so far caused two injuries. Fiat Chrysler has reported 7 injuries resulting from the defect. In the case of Continental, the moisture problem is different because the electrical circuitry of the airbags can be affected by corrosion due to moisture. Honda, Mercedes-Benz and Fiat Chrysler have already issued their own recalls, which are in various states.
Fiat Chrysler has plans on recalling some 112,000 2009 Dodge Journeys, 2008 and 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan, as well as Chrysler Town & Country minivans.
126,000 Mercedes-Benz models (2009 C-Class, 2010 GLK-Class).
Based on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration expansion of the Takata airbag recall, Honda (and Acura, its luxury division) is expanding its recall to include some 2.23 million more cars and SUVs as well as its only pickup truck.
