Honolulu to settle suit from lesbians jailed after kissing
Honolulu has chose to settle a lawsuit of $80,000 (£55,144) from a lesbian couple who were arrested and jailed after they were allegedly found kissing.
Details of the compensation emerged yesterday although it will have to be rubber-stamped by Honolulu City Council in July.
Courtney Wilson, 25, and Taylor Guerrero, 21, were on a romantic holiday in Hawaii when they were “harassed” by an off-duty cop who took exception to their public display of affection.
“For the publicity that it has gained, I hope that people saw it and it gives them inspiration to stand up for the civil rights that we have and to not tolerate bigotry behavior like that because it’s not acceptable”, she said. Harrison reportedly told them to stop and “take it somewhere else”.
According to the the two women, they were then held down by the store’s employees while Harrison went in search of zip ties.
The couple alleged that Officer Harrison grabbed Wilson by the wrist, and as they attempted to dial 911, a struggle ensued between the three parties.
An LA couple has settled out of court with the city of Honolulu after a local policeman assaulted them when he saw them kissing in the aisle of a supermarket reports, Hawaii News Now. They spent three days in jail before their charges were dropped.
The settlement dismisses Harrison from the lawsuit and isn’t an admission of any wrongdoing, Winter said.
After the lawsuit was filed, the Honolulu Police Department opened an internal investigation.
“The internal investigation was completed, and the allegations were not sustained”, Yu recently wrote in an email to The Associated Press.
The women, Courtney Wilson and Taylor Guerrero, were visiting the city from their home in Los Angeles in 2015.
Wilson and Guerrero are no longer a couple now.
“I got punched in the face by him”, Wilson said. “I’m glad it’s over, but at the same time we wanted the officer to suffer some sort of repercussion”, Wilson tells the AP.
The two of them plan to split the remaining settlement amount after paying their attorney’s fees.
