Hope Solo to face domestic violence charges after court decision reversed
Hope Solo, the star goalie who led the USA soccer team to the Women’s World Cup title in July, will again face domestic violence charges after a Washington state appeals court on Friday reversed a lower court’s decision to dismiss a case in which she was alleged to have beaten up her nephew and half-sister. It’s unclear when her trial will start, but she will have to answer to the charges that she likely believed were behind her.
Solo was involved in a violent fracas with her half-sister, Teresa Obert, and Obert’s 17-year-old son at their home in the Seattle suburbs in June 2014.
There is no timetable for her new trial yet, but it nevertheless calls into question Solo’s portrayal of the incident.
A document filed to the state court’s website on Friday states: “The court reverses the decision of the lower court and remands the case to the Kirkland Municipal Court”.
The appeals court decision was first reported by ESPN.
Solo’s attorney has said she acted in self defense after her nephew – who stood at 6-foot-9 and 280 pounds – hit her with a broomstick.
“I’m not going to go into all of the details, but it was a scary night”, Solo said.
“From here on out, no matter what happens, I’ll forever be associated with domestic violence“, she told ESPN earlier this year.
“She grabbed him by the head and she kept slamming him into the cement over and over again”, Obert told Outside the Lines. Obert said Solo also assaulted her when she came to her son’s aid.
Throughout her career, Solo has been as controversial as she has been popular and accomplished on the field.
Solo’s Seattle Reign lost 1-0 to FC Kansas City in Thursday’s National Women’s Soccer League championship game. This story was released right before the Women’s World Cup last June and sparked debate on if Solo should have played for the USWNT.
