Hormel recalls Skippy peanut butter jars
The recall was issued following a routine cleaning and check of the in-line magnet.
The recall has been made by Hormel with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The company says the metal fragments came from an equipment malfunction.
The reason that the Hormel Skippy recall is so serious is because metal shavings could potentially cause serious harm if swallowed.
The recalled product was sent to distribution centers for Target, Walmart and Publix located in Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Delaware, the FDA said.
Ingestion of this product could cause injuries such as severe choking, gastrointestinal perforation and a secondary infection.
Hormel Foods is voluntarily recalling 153 cases, or 1,871 total pounds, of a single code date of SKIPPY® Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter Spread, due to the possibility that a few jars may contain small pieces of metal shavings. In order to identify the jars affected by the Hormel Skippy recall, look for the “Best If Used By” date label of DEC1416LR1. However, the company added that no reports have been received of any consumer injuries or complaints.
Customers of the product are asked to return the jars to the place of purchase for replacement, or to phone Hormel Foods Customer Relations at 1-800-475-4779 for more information.
