Hornets’ D-League team will be based in Greensboro
It has been announced by Greensboro News that the Charlotte Hornets will have a Developmental League team by the start of next season and the team will be placed in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The team’s nickname and ticket information hasn’t been released. The team will play 24 home games beginning in 2016. In May we learned franchise officials said they are sending a request for proposal, or RFP, to seven cities throughout the Carolinas seeking a home for the D-League club, which would be owned and operated by Hornets Sports & Entertainment.
The D-League and the team announced Tuesday that the Hornets will own and operate the club as the league expands to 20 teams. An additional eight are operated under a “hybrid” affiliation, in which the NBA team funds and manages the basketball operations while local ownership maintains control of the business aspects.
Charlotte’s player development, especially that of its countless lottery picks, has been an area of scrutiny for a few time.
With the Charlotte Hornets owning and operating their own Developmental League team it will be a great cutting edge move going forward. Last season, they shared the Fort Wayne Mad Ants with 12 other teams and sent Noah Vonleh, whom they picked No. 9 in the 2014 National Basketball Association Draft, on assignment for two games, where he logged 13.4 minutes per contest.
