House conservative group would ‘look favorably’ on Ryan for speakership
Jordan stressed that Freedom Caucus members are focused on seeing a change in the way the House is run so that the speaker does not have inordinate power and use it in retaliation against conservative members who do not do the leaderships’ bidding.
In an extraordinary turn of events establishment Republican House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy – Speaker John Boehner’s handpicked candidate to succeed him as Speaker – has withdrawn from the race.
Now eyes are turned to another high-profile Republican, former vice presidential candidate Ryan, who fellow lawmakers say is considering the job during a weeklong congressional recess.
He also predicted that outgoing Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) would not be the one to lead Republicans through that debate. Ryan returned to Janesville, Wisconsin, to his wife and young family to turn over his options, with leading Republicans inside Congress and out urging him to step up for the good of the party.
However, Trump cautioned, there are other people who might grab the brass ring, particularly because Ryan hasn’t declared his intention to run for the position yet.
But to earn the support of the powerful Freedom Caucus, Jordan said Ryan, R-Wis., must first agree to undertake reforms in how House business is run.
Endlessly divided, House Republicans pleaded with Rep. Paul Ryan on Friday to rescue them from their damaging leadership vacuum. “I think it might actually help us get things done because all the issues are coming to a head and I think one way or another, people are going to be airing their grievances and we’re going to go from there”. “Because you think I would do the job great, and not because I’ve made a few promise”.
Freedom Caucus members insist that their goal is not to get a speaker who is necessarily as conservative as they are. “What he’s pushing is a more open and fair system”, Mulvaney said.
“Whoever the next speaker is must change the way the House is operating and functioning”, Martin said. “And right now, that’s what we need because the Republicans never win”, he said.
“We would ask that members not commit to a determinative course of action before our conference can meet and find a shared set of goals and governing vision that benefits the nation and our constituents”, the letter said. “We will end up with a speaker that all of us will support”.
“We should all learn from the [2012] presidential election [and not pick the] presumptive frontrunner, no ‘Next in line, ‘” Horowitz said. No other candidates, however, have risen to capture more support. “The answer, basically, is that he’s the best con man they’ve got”.
Jordan said members of his group are willing to compromise on legislation, but they don’t want to “forfeit to the White House before the game starts.”. “[Daniel Webster’s] conservative voting record is much different than mine, but he ran the House of Representatives and the Senate in Florida in a way that brought people together”.
