House Democrats cheer Clinton in first Capitol Hill meeting
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who has yet to concede the Democratic race to Clinton, is not on the list, AP and CNN report.
“It doesn’t appear that I’m going to be the nominee so I’m not going to be determining the scope of the convention”, Sanders said when asked if he wanted a speaking role there in July.
Hillary Clinton received a rousing reception from House Democrats on Wednesday, making her first stop on Capitol Hill since clinching the Democratic nomination.
“Where we are right now is what we are trying to do, which is no secret to anybody is to create the most progressive platform we possibly can … and second of all we are trying to do nothing less than transforming the Democratic Party”, he said.
The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee told those in attendance she would focus on all 50 states as she campaigns in the general election.
A top Republican official says he is anxious that some party leaders may help rebellious delegates who are hoping to derail Donald Trump’s presidential nomination at next month’s GOP national convention. At one point, the members ribbed Rep. Xavier Becerra – who’s been mentioned as a possible running mate – when he poured Clinton a glass of water.
“I really don’t have knowledge”, Becerra, of California, said before acknowledging that he has not been notified by the campaign that he is under consideration.
The senator stressed that he hopes to transform the party by addressing things like closed primaries and so-called “superdelegates”, who are free to support whatever candidate they choose at the Democratic convention.
“I love my candidate for president”, said Representative Joe Crowley.
Other potential contenders, including Massachusetts Sen.
The presumptive Republican nominee says in a speech he’s delivering Wednesday in NY that change is needed in Washington, because “we will never be able to fix a rigged system by counting on the people who rigged it in the first place”.
Democrats said there was little discussion of Mr Sanders or Mr Trump in the meeting, which was more like a pep rally for Mrs Clinton’s campaign.
She is looking to shore up her already strong support among Democratic lawmakers now that she’s the party’s presumptive nominee. Clinton will follow up on an address in Columbus, Ohio, in which she said Donald Trump would lead the country in a recession.
Trump also slammed Clinton and her husband for using their public sector influence to enrich themselves.
