House Freedom Caucus member: What about Bishop for Speaker?
“Now if new candidates declare themselves, we’re going to ask them to come talk to the house freedom caucus”. “Now I understand this is a hard issue, and I respect people who don’t agree with me on this, but the policy of a Romney administration will be to oppose abortions”.
DesJarlais disagrees with complaints that the Freedom Caucus was making too many demands on retiring House Speaker John Boehner and in the selection of Boehner’s successor. As we’ve said, he ran that committee more to score political points against President Barack Obama and other Democrats than to uncover the truth.
“The fact is, he’s a good guy, but whatever he was as a freshman, when he was a fighter on our committee, when he was trying to hold government accountable, he took a break from that”, Issa said.
But so far Paul Ryan has said he’s not running, and experts believe no one person may completely fix the party’s divide. He is the most prestigious member of the House on the Republican side, he has the best future, he’s still very young. Dent says, “It’s very easy to be against something, but when you’re in the majority and you’ve been given this great honor and opportunity and responsibility to govern you have to actually advance an agenda”. They want to permanently transform the power structure of the House GOP so that the (more conservative) rank and file can have greater authority, thus upending a decades-long strengthening of the office.
“But I think whoever the next Speaker is, Paul Ryan or anyone else, has to go to that kind of model”. After McCarthy dropped out, Ryan said he might reconsider his refusal.
“It’s not about the who, it’s about the what… what are we going to do so we can get Republicans together on the same page”, Labrador said on “CNN’s State of the Union”. “What do you think of Paul Ryan?”
That same rule would force Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) to resign from his spot in the Republican leadership if he decides to run for Speaker of the House.
Despite the setback, House Republicans eventually will elect a new speaker, said Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-3rd Dist.). Stewart added that he urged Ryan to run, with the Wisconsin Republican replying that he was “thinking and praying on it”.
“So Republicans, as a cohesive unit are falling apart and are unable to get 218”, Wanless said.
McCarthy announced his decision at a meeting of Republicans in the Capitol, and the gathering quickly became chaotic, with many members unable even to hear what was being said.
Chaffetz said he does not know the former member, but he knows that Chairman and South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy and the committee have said the allegations are false.
“It’s not helpful for one group of members to say they will only vote for this candidate on the floor”, Boehner said, in apparent reference to the conservative Freedom Caucus, which has about 40 members and is aligned with the small-government Tea Party movement.
