House GOP may opt against shutdown over Planned Parenthood
U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) spoke on the Senate floor after Senate Democrats filibustered a government funding bill that would have redirected money from Planned Parenthood to Community Health Centers. Not so much that a shutdown over the spending bill was in the offing, but that Boehner’s scalp would be enough to satisfy those who were prepared to either block that bill if it included Planned Parenthood funding. “It is Congress’ responsibility to keep the government open and provide critical funding for our troops and our veterans, along with other important provisions for America and for Georgia”.
That’s a policy backed by Murkowski.
Representative Elijah Cummings also had some things to say about the upcoming investigation, telling The Washington Post “House Republicans already have three standing committees with subpoena power conducting one-sided, biased attacks against Planned Parenthood, so it is unclear why they need a fourth”.
In the past, Conaway has warned against such a leadership battle and said Friday that “it would be better not to be arguing about who the speaker is at all, and trying to deal with these issues”. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has not announced a plan to avoid shutting down the government come next Wednesday at midnight. It also said that in the year that ended on June 30, 2014, it received $528.4 million in “government health services grants and reimbursements”. On Thursday, the Republican-led Wisconsin Assembly approved a bill banning the state from using federal family planning money from going to Planned Parenthood and other organizations that perform abortions.
Internal GOP divisions over what tactics to use to take on Planned Parenthood have House leaders tied in knots, and they have been unable to take on their traditional role of initiating spending legislation.
So the scramble continues to keep the government funded.
Carly FIorina defended her statements on Planned Parenthood Sunday, saying the videos in question show the organization’s officials speaking of harvesting an aborted baby’s brains, despite accusations that she made this up.
Boozman voted for the funding bill. The 5,200 low-income women will easily find their access through the Louisiana Public Health Department, volunteer physicians and mid-level providers.
“The continuing resolution, will that require Democratic votes to pass?” asked Dickerson.
Eight Republicans, several of them supporters of abortion rights, voted with 42 Democrats and two independents.
