House GOP moves on sanctuary issue after California tragedy
San Francisco set Steinle’s killer free before the murder because of its adoption of “sanctuary city” status. We’ll never know the answer to that question.
As recently as July 7 of this year, a 29 year old illegal immigrant who had been deported six times, almost killed an Arizona family in a auto accident.
ICE now blames San Francisco for failing to notify ICE when that charge was dropped.
Police officers arrested Sanchez about an hour after Wednesday’s seemingly random slaying of Kathryn Steinle at Pier 14 – one of the busiest attractions in the city.
To add to the angst, Sanchez had just been released from the slammer by San Francisco County Sheriff Mark Mirkarimi, despite an “ICE” (Immigration, Customs and Enforcement) “hold” placed on him. San Francisco immigration consultant Leo Lacayo supports that and says it’s time for federal immigration reform.
How do they get away with it?
Obama hasn’t extended condolences, and White House spokesman Josh Earnest cravenly refers reporters inquiring about Obama’s sentiments to the Homeland Security Department, an agency that takes its lead from the mum White House.
The last serious attempt to count the number of federal criminal laws appears to have been made in 1982 by a retired Justice Department official named Ronald Gainer. “Cooperation with federal immigration enforcement officials still can exist, but state and local law enforcement should carefully tailor policies to ensure that community policing is not undermined”.
The law, Assembly Bill 4, prevents county jails from holding criminals for extra time just so they can be deported. What an absurd – and risky! – situation.
Not all illegal immigrants are felons and many of them are very productive members of society, but as a country, the United States must decide whether it will be governed by the rule of law or whether each city will decide for itself which federal laws it will enforce. “They accumulated 7,491 new charges in total, after their release”.
Steinle’s death has fueled a national debate on immigration, with advocates of stricter border control denouncing San Francisco as a city whose immigrant “sanctuary” protections harbor people who are in the country illegally.
ICE said this may have been true in the past, but it isn’t now. “This administration has released, on average, a thousand criminal illegal aliens per day”.
Sanctuary communities are not shunning ICE, but they don’t want the relationship between cops and residents undercut by the agency. “It may not have been the intent of San Francisco’s sanctuary policy to allow people like this to go back to the street, people like Sanchez, but this was a predictable result of having such a policy that this could happen”, Vaughan said.
You won’t find any cities in Georgia on the list. Also, in the last six and a half years, the Obama administration has been quite aggressive in roping local police and sheriff’s departments into the enforcement of federal immigration law, using tools like Secure Communities.
In a 2011 poll, Rasmussen Reports said that 59 percent of the people it surveyed supported measures to curtail federal funding of sanctuary cities. I’ll bet those figures would be even higher today – but not among liberal Democrats. Is O’Reilly right? Time will tell, but a full exposition of the subject would not be complete without an explanation of the genesis of sanctuary city policies.
This is no surprise, since Hillary has been moving sharply left for months.
Trump failed to make contact with the Steinles after that, which may be the reason why Brad Steinle is unhappy about the continued attention – or perhaps he’s unhappy in the way that Trump has framed the issue.
