House majority leader eyed as next speaker
Now the thankless job of speaker seems certain to go to Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, a Bakersfield Republican.
Many Republicans said they would reject any bill that did not defund the organization.
The turmoil in Congress is playing out against an already roiling race for the Republican presidential nomination in which the candidates at the top of opinion polls are all Washington outsiders.
“Under John’s leadership, the Republican majority in the House gained strength and worked hard to reduce spending, defend America’s interest internationally and empower free enterprise”.
“Last night I started thinking about this and this morning I woke up and I said my prayers – as I always do – and I decided today’s the day I’m going to do this”, Boehner said at a press conference in Washington, according to CNN. “And if I wasn’t planning on leaving here soon – I can tell you I would not have done this”.
Rep. Steve Scalise, R-1st District, the House GOP whip, said no one has done more than Boehner “to defend innocent human life, to combat a lawless executive branch, and to advance a conservative governing vision for our country”.
The speaker vote will “take place more than a month from now within the House Republican Conference”, Roby said. He says the state’s lone House member, Republican Kristi Noem, could lose some of her political influence with Boehner out of the picture.
A focus of conservatives’ complaints, Boehner “just does not want to become the issue”, said Rep. John Mica, R-Fla.
“I’m not here to bash anyone”, Florida Sen.
“As I advocated in January, ‘The only way to improve the product is to fix the process, ‘” Webster said in a separate released statement.
But some conservatives in the party say it was time for a change. “I wish him the best in his future endeavors”. A former Cincinnati-area bartender charged with threatening to kill Boehner is going to trial.
The tactic was unsuccessful. In recent weeks he has been trying to avoid a possible government shutdown triggered by a proposal to defund Planned Parenthood.
None of them succeeded, of course, but Boehner’s name was never too far from words like “mutiny” or “revolt” when it came to his own party.
McCarthy is a pro-life conservative who does not support renewal of the Export-Import Bank and has vowed to vote against any global warming legislation that would raise taxes.
At the White House, the president said he was surprised by the announcement and praised his rival’s time in office. “A lot of people felt very strongly that he had been a good speaker, but this was a result of a division within the House Republican Conference”.
