Houston Astros Dallas Keuchel wins American League Cy Young Award
Keuchel got 22 of the 30 first-place votes and finished comfortably in front of Price, the runner-up who got the remaining eight first-place votes. He also led the American League with a 1.017 WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched).
It was the second of two no-nos thrown against Los Angeles this season, a rare dubious accomplishment for a team that won its division. “It’s kind of incredible to think about it”. Kershaw led the major leagues in strikeouts and innings and tied Arrieta for the lead in complete games and shutouts. Kershaw had the other three firsts and 101 points.
Before the announcement of the NL Cy Young victor this evening, fans all over the country are giving their opinion on who should win. While both pitchers were exceptional, the voters opted to go with Arrieta.
In his first year in Washington, ace Max Scherzer finished fifth in the National League Cy Young Award race as Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta won the trophy for the first time. Oakland A’s pitcher Sonny Gray finished third. He’s the first Cub to win the award since Greg Maddux in 1992. He received one second-place vote, 24 third-place votes and three fourth-place votes.
Greinke’s numbers were just as impressive with a 19-3 record and had a 1.66 ERA.
Keuchel especially excelled at home.
Keuchel, starting pitcher in this year’s All-Star game, already had been named 2015 victor of the Warren Spahn Award, given to baseball’s top lefty. Traded from Detroit to Toronto in late July, he was a key reason the Blue Jays made their first playoff appearance since 1993.
“It’s something I definitely never expected”, Keuchel, the third Astro to win the award after Mike Scott (1986) and Roger Clemens (2004), said after the result was announced on the Major League Baseball Network. This is Price’s second runner up finish, he was second to Felix Hernandez in 2012. No Tigers player will win that award, but outfielder J.D. Martinez is likely to appear on a good number of ballots.
