The scoring picked up in the second half as Houston won 38-24. 3 Clemson, but closed the regular season on a three-game winning streak after beating archival Florida. Florida State falls in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl to Houston. Maguire returned midway through the second quarter with a wrap around his left ankle and foot. Houston quarterback Greg Ward Jr. passed for 238 yards and a touchdown and ran for two touchdowns and 67 yards in the win, although he was knocked out of the game late in the fourth quarter. – Houston’s William Jackson III and Trevon Stewart each picked off two passes. However, the Seminoles defense stepped up and caused a 3 and out. The Cougars ran a season-high 99 plays and totaled 448 yards with Ward and backup Kyle Postma under center.
The Seminoles were unbeaten and ranked No. 9 before losing October 24 at struggling Georgia Tech on a blocked field goal returned for a touchdown. Against a Houston defense dependent on invading the backfield and forcing mistakes, FSU was letting defenders into the backfield at will and generously making mistakes with a quarterback who clearly couldn’t step completely into passes and direct the ball where he wanted it to go.
The second touchdown was a pass from WR Demarcus Ayers on a trick play to WR Chance Allen.
The momentum turned back to the Cougars two plays later, when Maguire’s pass was intercepted by Stewart. Historically, the Seminoles are fantastic at keeping the ball in bowl games, but that trend has been bucked in the last two seasons, and wouldn’t you know it, the Noles have lost their bowl games the last two years. He only had a combined four missed field goal in his first two seasons.
