Houston Texans make adjustments in 23-14 win over Bears
Fuller dropped what potentially would have resulted in an 83-yard touchdown late in the first half yet finished with five catches for 107 yards.
Fuller, a rookie out of Notre Dame, discovered a measure of redemption with his touchdown and another 35-yard reception that set up a 38-yard Nick Novak field goal with 6:10 remaining.
But Chicago then got a touchdown before the half, a 19-yard catch by Eddie Royal from Jay Cutler, to put the Bears up 14-10 at halftime. The Bears defense wasn’t playing badly, but they didn’t do a good enough job getting pressure on Brock Osweiler either.
The 25-year-old Osweiler, who left the Broncos to sign with the Texans as a free agent in the offseason, threw an interception on the Texans’ first possession.
That would be all the Texans needed, as they held on for the victory.
With the Texans trailing 14-13 early in the fourth quarter, Osweiler capped a nine-play, 64-yard drive with an 18-yard touchdown pass on third and long to wide receiver Will Fuller to put the Texans up 20-14. He found Alshon Jeffery for a 54 yard gain to give the Bears a first down.
The Bears’ second touchdown came after a 31-second drive that ended with seven seconds left in the half.
Though defensive lineman J.J. Watt played the majority of the game for the Texans, he had just one tackle.
Houston middle linebacker Brian Cushing injured his knee in the first quarter against the Chicago Bears and is questionable to return. Whitney Mercilus also had two sacks and forced a fumble.
The Texans stay home for Week Two as they play host to the team that eliminated them in the 2016 postseason the Kansas City Chiefs.
