How Donald Trump Would Have Handled The Miss Universe Mix-Up
But many colombianos fear that trauma is ahead for their queen.
“I was very happy for Miss Colombia because she really deserved it. I’m really not happy with the result and so are the other girls, I’m sorry to say it”, she added. “I just kept reading the card and it said, “First runner-up” and I went, ‘Oh my goodness'”.
Whether or not Gutierrez needs some time to recover, there’s no doubt that Colombians are dealing with some anguish themselves.
The “Family Feud” host said he misread the cue card when he announced Miss Colombia as the victor of the annual competition, instead of Miss Phillippines.
A quick turnaround saw the crown being popped onto contestant Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach’s head while Steve hung his head in shame. “The photos are there to prove it”.
Many viewers agreed and tweeted that Gutierrez was the epitome of grace. “After winning last year’s Miss Universe we’re a beauty pageant powerhouse and nobody wants us to win again”.
People on the internet weren’t too happy about Miss Germany’s comments.
Miss Universe pageant has now become rather boring and the coveted event has lost its charm in the past few years but this year the pageant was on every network, thanks to a major goof-up by the show’s host, Steve Harvey.
“Mafias are everywhere. They stole the title”, said Efrain Salinas, a doorman in a Bogota apartment building. He softened his tone later that morning in an interview on NBC’s Today Show, calling Harvey a “great guy” who handled it well. Trump subsequently sold the pageant and tweeted after the flub that it “would never have happened” on his watch.
Even before Sunday night’s oops moment, the pageant was involved in another controversy when a backlash against Trump led Univision to pull out of the broadcast and the businessman to sell it in September. She said Harvey told her afterward that she “should just enjoy the moment”. “You know, things happen, it’s live television, and the new owners are tremendous people”, he said. And a transcribing error caused the wrong author’s name to be announced for a National Book Award in 2011.
