NEH is the federal agency that makes local programs like “A Journey through Vietnam” possible, through grant making across the nation and core funding to state humanities councils like ours. This is just the first step toward creating a budget for 2018, and at this time, the NEA has announced that its 2017 operations will continue as planned.
The Corporation of Public Broadcasting now has a budget of $445 million, while the National Endowments for the Arts and Humanities each have a budget of $148 million. The estimate includes grants from the NEA, NEH and CPB, as well as the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the last of which funnels money to, obviously, museums and libraries. Its appropriation for 2016 was $147.9 million, which is.004 percent of the national budget, a majority of which went to benefit people with fewer opportunities to participate in the arts, according to its website.

Have you worked for an organization that received funding from the NEA?
“My counterparts in our wealthier states, they’re not going to lose their state councils, because they’re going to have the capacity with their populations to raise the money”, said Smith.
Supporters of the cuts don’t disagree that arts and culture are important, but they say it’s not the government’s place to be in the culture business. Wilkins called the president’s proposed budget “a shame but not a surprise”. Funding would increase treatment for opioid addiction and building more military weaponry and hardware. Walker says the money fuels big museums, little theater companies and everything in between – from the Cape to the Berkshires.
New budget cuts proposed by President Trump could affect local arts programs.
