How Heartless Angela Merkel Made Refugee Girl Cry
“All that was missing was Merkel making refugee children cry”, Belarusian-born writer Evgeny Morozov tweeted.
Merkel was sympathetic but firm on executing her policies, telling the teen, “Sometimes politics is hard”.
In an interview with German You Tube personality Florian Mundt yesterday, Merkel said that she believed in ending discrimination and in the concept of civil partnerships and marital benefits for same sex couples. Angela Merkel made a poor Palestinian refugee girl cry on live TV show last night, explaining her that she has to get out of Germany.
During a televised appearance in a school gym filled with teenagers, a young Palestinian girl named Reem told Merkel that she and her family are facing deportation after coming to Germany from a Lebanese refugee camp four years ago. “But it’s really unpleasant to watch how others can enjoy life, while I can’t do the same myself”.
In a week in which Germany has confronted global criticism for a hard line on debt-mired Greece, Merkel was hit with fresh accusations of coldness, just as others leapt to her defense.
“But you did great”, the 60-year-old chancellor said, gingerly stroking Reem. She said she was anxious because of the uncertainty over whether she and her family would be able to stay in the country. She explained not every migrant can stay in Germany because the country simply can’t accept and manage the “thousands and thousands” of Palestinians wishing to take refuge there. Merkel then approached the girl and tried to stroke her hair.
Merkel’s performance caused a stir on social media Thursday, including the top-trending German hashtag on Twitter. Merkel’s gentle but frank answer prompted the girl to burst into tears. Merkel said.
Some social media users complained that Mrs Merkel had “petted” the girl and failed to show understanding, although others defended the leader’s reaction.
Merkel said with recently adopted measures, Germany will try to conclude asylum applications in a short period of time. She cited her government’s decision to speed up processing of asylum seekers.
