How Obama’s final State of the Union set him apart
President Barack Obama announced a new national effort to cure cancer, with Vice President Joe Biden leading the charge, during his final State of the Union address Tuesday night.
Obama stopped in Papillion before the speech to visit the home of high school teacher Lisa Martin, who emailed the president a year ago about the world her son would grow up in. Reporter: Obama pitched opt minimum for the future and a case for a democrat to succeed him taking a veiled swipe at republican candidates who have attacked his strategy for combating Isis. “And despite all the political arguments we’ve had these past few years, there are some areas where Americans broadly agree”, he argued. That’s not telling it like it is. “It’s just wrong… And it betrays who we are as a country”.
Colbert said the specter of Donald Trump hung over Obama’s speech, although he did not mention the Republican frontrunner by name “because, if you say it three times, he appears behind you and demands your birth certificate”. “That may work as a TV sound bite, but it doesn’t pass muster on the world stage”. “It’s bluster. It’s not serious”, the president said to a crowd of about 8,000.
“Tonight marks the eighth year I’ve come here to report on the State of the Union”.
“I’m going to try to make it a little shorter”, he said.
“Look, anything’s possible. And I think, you know, we shouldn’t be complacent”.
“That’s how insane our politics has gotten at times. Leadership means a wise application of military power and rallying the world behind causes that are right”. They want us to believe that the American dream is no more. “The world respects us not just for our arsenal; it respects us for our diversity and our openness and the way we respect every faith”.
Obama said that it was a matter of great regret in his presidency. That’s the story ISIL wants to tell; that’s the kind of propaganda they use to recruit. But there is still more work to be done, and President Obama outlined a clear plan on how we can build on that progress.
