How Putin Will Respond to Russia’s Protests
The action follows a nationwide wave of protests Sunday that saw tens of thousands demonstrators rallying across Russian Federation, the largest outpouring of discontent in years, issuing a challenge to the Kremlin.
Darya, who is studying computer programming at university, said she made a decision to join the protest after Mr Navalny’s anti-corruption group released a video expose linking Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev to a vast property empire. “What I see happening now, you should not do”, she said.
Russian high school student Roman Shingarkin had some explaining to do when he got home after becoming one of the faces of anti-Kremlin protests at the weekend. At least 13 journalists were roughed up and arrested covering Sunday’s protests. They were the largest anti-government street demonstrations in Russian Federation for five years. One of the reasons the last wave of protests petered out was the disconnect between Moscow activists such as Navalny and grassroots organizers in the regions, says Mischa Gabowitsch, author of the bookProtest in Putin’s Russian Federation.
The other choice is to replace him. The Sunday protests, Svetlana said, “brought only good vibes” and allowed her to “meet like-minded people”.
Roskam’s statement came after hundreds of peaceful protesters, including prominent Kremlin opposition figure and critic Alexey Navalny, were arrested during otherwise peaceful but unauthorized protests in Moscow.
Moscow “has nothing against” any Russian business representative taking part in a congressional hearing, Putin said, noting that Deripaska has been denied entry to the United States for unknown reasons. Ilya Krasilshik, Meduza’s publisher, told The Moscow Times that his website owed its success to a combination of unexpected interest in the demonstrations and an nearly complete lack of competition among other news outlets.
Yet, the people who came out to protest on March 26th did so only in response to the film about Medvedev, nor because Navalny called them to protest.
The European Union is calling on Russian authorities to release demonstrators detained during a series of protests across the country on Sunday. Now, the minor is facing charges over a violation of Russia’s Administrative Code. The video is enhanced with visual effects, photos of documents and footage of the luxury properties allegedly connected to Medvedev. She also complained that everyone is aware of this situation but nobody is taking any measures to change it.
If we think we have it bad here, it is far worse in Russian Federation.
Navalny, who built a following from posting anti-Kremlin videos and blog entries on social media, has gained significant popularity with people who rely on the internet, rather than state TV, to get their news.
As the White House condemned the arrests – “interference” that could spoil Putin’s budding friendship with US President Donald Trump – the Kremlin spokesman called the protests a “provocation” and anxious that outsiders could seek to manipulate Russian youth.
Then, as now, he was thrown in jail for two weeks for not obeying the police. Of course that Russian authorities had a reaction to this.
“The Trump Administration should make clear to the Russian government that it will not tolerate high-level corruption, nor the violation of human rights committed in the name of masking that corruption”.
“They are exhausted of living below the poverty line while people they pay to rule wisely are swimming in gold”, Pravov says. Snegova added that young people are not satisfied with the stagnation in a society where old politicians are leading the country “in a vague direction and nothing changes”.
Navalny praised turnouts for the protests in early morning tweets. Few Russians blame Putin: only 17% think corruption has worsened since he became President. “It was the system against which they protested”.
