How Taylor Swift bested West in her Grammys speech
She cheered for Kendrick Lamar, too, before disappearing while a bunch of underwhelming performers marched by.
While BFFs Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez were getting ready for the big show, they learned that Swift’s “Bad Blood” music video (which Gomez stars in) won a Grammy.
After thanking her fans, collaborators and Mac Martin, her long-time producer, Swift reached out to women in the audience.
“To all the woman out there … there will be people who try to undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments or your fame”, the singer said on stage, adding “don’t let people sidetrack you”. It all started when Kanye West released the track Famous, which made a comment about him and Taylor having sex in the future, while claiming that it was he who made her famous.
“Art is the unapologetic celebration of culture through self-expression”. Sheeran also won a Grammy for best pop solo performance.
But Lamar’s performance, while intense, ended up being a cacophony medley of “The Blacker the Berry” and “Alright”. Hip-hop has fared particularly badly.
Lamar’s critically acclaimed album “To Pimp a Butterfly” has even been studied in schools, and now it’s a Grammy victor for best new rap album.
Mark Ronson’s smash hit “Uptown Funk” with Bruno Mars was named Record of the Year. The single is also nominated for song and record of the year.
Adele’s performance was slightly hampered, however, by audio problems which appeared to throw the singer.
She tweeted after the ceremony explaining the technical hitch: ‘The piano mics fell on to the piano strings, that’s what the guitar sound was. “It made it sound out of tune”.
While Little Big Town did a nice job with its pared-back “Girl Crush” (featuring what seemed like the Pylon Cam from the Super Bowl), the subdued work didn’t do the song justice. Justin Bieber picked up his first Grammy for his collaboration with Skrillex and Diplo, winning best dance recording for “Where Are U Now”. “I promise we’re going to keep going”.
Far more edgy than Lamar’s performance was actor/musician Gary Sinese giving a shout out to military men and women while presenting an award.
Best rock performance: “Don’t Wanna Fight”, Alabama Shakes.
“This is something you never ever dream of so I’m super grateful for it”, he said. But her message to young women all over the world is something we can all get behind, and I also loved it that she stuck it to Kanye.
Her hair aflame, Lady Gaga paid a tribute to David Bowie.
Along with the heavy metal group Hollywood Vampires, Depp played a tribute to Motorhead’s frontman Lemmy Kilmister who died in December 2015.
