How the Urban Meyer suspension will effect the Longhorns
The message sent by Meyer’s obligatory and laughable three-game suspension for completely mishandling and covering up the domestic violence accusations against former assistant coach Zach Smith came in loud and clear Wednesday night.
When investigators reviewed Meyer’s phone, it contained no messages more than a year old.
Ohio State announced Meyer’s punishment Wednesday night: a three-game suspension without pay and a ban from interacting with his team until September 2. The other request was for the same types of correspondence, over the same time period, between Meyer and athletic director Gene Smith.
According to reporter Brett McMurphy, Smith also “took multiple photos of his penis inside the Ohio State coaches’ offices, inside the White House when the Buckeyes visited in 2015 and also photographed himself in the coaches’ offices receiving oral sex and having sex with a OSU staffer”. Courtney Smith, who filed an order of protection against Zach Smith on July 20.
The report presented to the board, which consisted of 40 witness interviews and the review of “over 60,000 e-mails and 10,000 text messages”, also concluded that “Coach Meyer has ‘a honest commitment to the Respect for Women core values that he espouses and tries to instill in his players'”.
Drake said a wide range of sanctions for Meyer and Gene Smith were considered, including firing them. As Meyer admitted in the press conference, he told investigators that his relationship with mentor Earle Bruce may have affected his impartiality in dealing with Zach Smith, Bruce’s grandson. I want to apologize to Buckeye Nation.
“I felt pretty confident in saying as of a couple days ago that termination was taken off of the table, but suspension was very much in play and it seemed that the school president was firm on some sort of punishment being handed down”. The report states another Ohio State football coach joined Smith at the strip club.
After failing to utter Courtney Smith’s name during the Tuesday night press conference in Columbus, Meyer f was asked what his message to her would be.
Meyer implied to reporters in Chicago that both incidents were false accusations, though he didn’t “know who creates a story like that”.
Before that, Meyer always seemed to be someone who always did the smart thing, who always demanded the utmost in discipline and dedication from his players and coaches at Ohio State. “I should have done more and I am sorry for that”.
The committee report stated that “Coach Meyer has sometimes had significant memory issues in other situations where he had prior extensive knowledge of events”.
“My intention was not to say anything inaccurate or misleading”, Meyer wrote in a statement on Twitter later.
When Michael Drake, Gene Smith, and Meyer walked to the podium, the body language of all three told the story.
The three games Meyer will miss are at home against Oregon State and Rutgers, and a neutral-site game against TCU at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
“But I will maintain that until proven otherwise, Meyer did what was asked of him in terms of reporting to his superiors”.
In a statement, Zach Smith’s attorney said his client should not have married Courtney Smith.
An Ohio State spokesperson did not reply immediately to a request for comment.
Meyer has one of the best college football winning percentages of all time, with 188 wins and only 34 losses in 17 years.
Some had called for Meyer to be fired after McMurphy’s intial report. “I got investigated twice, and no charges ever came about it because I didn’t do anything physically to harm her”.
