SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Carolina Panthers looked tight in the first half of Super Bowl 50 against the Denver Broncos. Denver followed that up with a defensive touchdown when Von Miller sacked Panthers quarterback Cam Newton inside the 5-yard line, caused a fumble and Denver recovered in the end zone for a 10-0 lead.

It’s the second time in franchise history that the Panthers are in the Super Bowl, and they have never won a title since entering the league in 1995. At 16-10, the 50th Super Bowl came down to Denver’s defense finishing it off. He got bamboozled into his first interception of this year’s playoffs and could’ve thrown a few more had the Panthers’ defenders had better hands. It was one of the rare times fans from one team had a palpable impact in what is traditionally considered a sterile environment with corporate tickets and fans from non-Super Bowl teams gobbling up numerous seats.

Carolina scored more points than any National Football League team in the regular season, and they totaled 80 points in two postseason games.

Manning said he told Newton after the game he should be congratulated on his great season and that the Panthers would be back in the Super Bowl. McManus added a 33-yard field goal for Denver, which took a 13-7 lead to the half.

An interception and a fumble that led to the final touchdown by C.J. Anderson capped off the win.

In those 24 games Carolina has outscored its opponent by a whopping margin of 735-427 – or by an average score of 31-18.

Three field goals, five times sacked, one measly offensive touchdown.

Far from spectacular in the Super Bowl (13 of 23 for 141 yards, 0 TDs, 1 INT), like many quarterbacks before him Manning was simply good enough to win.

Denver converted on a fourth-and-1, but a holding penalty nullified the run and the Broncos settled for a field goal.

The Denver Broncos won this new Lombardi Trophy in spite of Manning, who had what might have been one last tough night at the office. But four plays later, Newton was intercepted by T.J. Ward. Gary Kubiak is the first to win a Super Bowl as player and coach for the same team.

Denver were unable to make any impression on the Carolina defense and seemed to be content to punt again knowing that the Panthers were getting little joy from the Broncos defense.

And, showing his versatility, the 6-foot-3, 250-pound Miller even made plays in pass coverage, dropping back to force an incompletion from Newton to Jerricho Cotchery.
