How Trump’s rules on coal-fired power plants differ from Obama’s
He even toyed with the idea of using a Cold War era national defense law to force electric utilities to buy power from failing coal plants.
Health advocacy groups blasted the Environmental Protection Agency’s plan to roll back Obama-era limits on coal-fired power plant emissions, with one group arguing the changes could result in more than 1,000 avoidable deaths a year in the USA while doing nothing to address climate change.
The proposal released by the Environmental Protection Agency is now open for a public comment period.
The Trump Administration released a new plan Tuesday to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from power plants and address climate change.
Trump is expected to tout the proposal as a lifeline for coal at a West Virginia rally later on Tuesday (we’ll probably also hear about CLEAN COAL!), but it’s unlikely to save a dying, economically unfeasible industry. “I’m sorry, I got distracted”, he said.
“Scientists have determined that at least 1,400 preventable deaths a year will be caused by this plan, and there is no science underneath it”, he said.
According to the EPA’s announcement, the new rule will replace the Obama administration’s Clean Power Plan, which it describes as “overly prescriptive and burdensome”.
In Iowa, Attorney General Tom Miller said the Trump plan takes the nation backward. It would allow the facilities to make upgrades without triggering requirements under New Source Review. But other states could have faced earlier retirements for coal-fired power plants under the Obama-era plan.
The EPA’s own analysis of the Trump administration proposal also estimated that it will lead to an increase in pollution-related illnesses, like asthma, and a rise in premature deaths.
The agency projected a smaller drop in carbon dioxide levels than the Obama administration’s regulation while saving the power sector $400 million a year in compliance costs. “A deadly coal plan that will expose our children and our families to deadly air because of coal pollution …” Hall said these long-term energy plans weigh the energy mix, consumer preferences and the environment of the future.
“This alleged plan does nothing but blow smoke while we eat it”, he said.
The federal government isn’t permitted by the Clean Air Act to trigger sweeping changes to the energy grid in the name of climate change, the administration says.
Trump, whose ascent to the presidency effectively killed off the plan, had blasted it “intrusive” and claimed it would “kill jobs”.
“Our planning and long-term investment in the communities where we work and live extends far beyond any single presidential administration”, he said.
“It would mean more climate-changing pollution from power plants”, Suh added.
A new proposal from the Environmental Protection Agency Tuesday has led to quite a divide. And a year ago Trump announced that he would pull the USA out of the landmark Paris Agreement on climate change.
The Clean Power Plan took a wide approach to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by encouraging states to shift electricity generation away from coal and toward natural gas, renewable energy, and energy efficiency.
“We’re not gonna have a coal power plant floating around”, Pelosi said during a discussion about energy policy at the Public Policy Institute of California in San Francisco.
