Huckabee supports Kentucky clerk on defying federal courts
Many of Kentucky’s Republican and Democratic leaders are pushing for a change to the state’s marriage license law so that clerks won’t have to sign off on the forms.
Davis has been ordered to appear in court Thursday, where she could be fined or imprisoned for contempt of court.
“I sit next to Kim Davis”.
Defying legal decisions that go all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court, Kim Davis, the Rowan County, Ky., clerk, continued to deny marriage licenses on Wednesday in protest of same-sex marriage.
On Tuesday morning, Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis remained in her office, door and blinds closed, as the first licenses were denied.
Since the Supreme Court legalized gay marriage across the nation, couples have stood in her office and wept.
“She saw just a straight couple in love, and she should see everybody like that”, Colen said.
– She Was Elected To Her Position: Davis, a Democrat, won a 2014 election for Rowan County clerk handily – 53 percent to 46 percent. Instead, they argue in a motion submitted to the court that since Davis is receiving payment from the commonwealth of Kentucky to do a job she refuses to do, the court should impose fines on her that will compel her to perform her duties. District 36 encompasses Northeast Dallas and surrounding suburbs, among them the Preston Hollow neighborhood where former President George W. Bush lives. Since Davis is refusing to leave her $80,000-a-year position, however, additional steps must be taken.
“She testified pretty clearly that she’s never asked anyone about their marriage past before issuing a marriage license”, said Roger Gannam, Davis’ attorney. “It is a heaven-or-hell decision”, she said.
Mat Staver, who is of the Liberty Counsel organization and is her legal representation, said her past isn’t of importance now that she has become a devout Christian. Davis attempted to appeal that decision to the 6th U.S. Circuit Court.
But Davis has found an ally in her fight in US Senator Rand Paul despite his belief that states should get out of the license business altogether.
The two groups lined up on the lawn, on either side of the courthouse entrance to chant at each other.
Q: What are Davis’ grounds for refusing to comply with court orders? On their way out, Miller and Roberts passed David Ermold and David Moore, 17 years a couple. Davis’ supporters marched by, chanting.
In her statement, Rowan admits, “I am not flawless”. “I feel like I’ve been humiliated on such a national level, I can’t even comprehend it”. She later married Joe Davis in 1996.
“Have you received death threats for what you believe?” she says, before adding that “our Constitution was founded on faith”, and being cut off by the couple and protesters.
“I can guarantee this much: I will do everything that I can to hold Gov. Beshear responsible by not voting for his son Andy”, Smith said. “Don’t come knocking on my door”.
