Huddersfield defeat Newcastle to maintain winning Premier League start
Huddersfield Town is looking to build on their English Premier League campaign with a second win when they host fellow newly-promoted side Newcastle United.
After the opening weekend, Huddersfield sit second in the table after beating Crystal Palace 3-0. “I want to give them what they deserve”.
Huddersfield boss David Wagner feels there is nothing wrong with there being a rising sense of expectation around the club – but is amused by the suggestion they are favourites for Sunday’s match against Newcastle.
Newcastle travel to Huddersfield Town on Saturday, having lost their opening fixture 2-0 at home to Tottenham Hotspur last Sunday after midfielder Jonjo Shelvey was sent off.
Mooy’s stunning strike came in the 50th minute when he played a neat one-two at the top of the box with striker Elias Kachunga, before the Australian curled his effort past Newcastle keeper Rob Elliot into the top right corner.
“I am very happy and proud that the players really followed our idea to try and keep Newcastle as far away as possible from our goal”, he said.
Two games, no points and, more worryingly, no goals is a bad start for Newcastle and that’s where we start with the first of three things we learned from their defeat. You can’t win games of football when you’ve got people making those decisions so close to your goal.
Matt Richie almost opened the scoring against the run of play in the 16th minute when he thumped a far post effort that Jonas Lossl pushed wide for a corner.
Nine points or more from the first half a dozen games would surely have been the aim/hope, especially with any dropped points meaning relegation rivals would be picking them up. The match starts at 22:30 on 20 August 2017. We were not one of the best teams in the Championship but, for sure, we were one of the fittest.
“We only wanted to be courageous in every single game, to search for our chance, and I think we’ve done it so far”.
Signs of “We are Premier League” were proudly displayed outside the ground and former players, such as ex-England worldwide Frank Worthington, savoured the occasion in the stands.
