Hue Jackson is next head coach of the Cleveland Browns
Jackson took over the Raiders’ top post in 2011 and went 8-8 in his lone head coaching stint before being fired at the end of the season.
Jackson will be the Browns’ fourth head coach since the start of the 2009 season.
Jackson had emerged as the Browns’ primary target after the first wave of interviews.
Jackson’s background working with quarterbacks, his knowledge of the AFC North, and his experience as Oakland’s coach has made him attractive to the Browns.
The Giants are still going to interview Hue Jackson on Thursday morning, according to two sources.
“They made me feel comfortable”, Jackson told NFL Media’s Mike Silver, who reported the hiring on Twitter before the Browns confirmed it.
That news left just the Browns and Giants in the running and, as it turns out, the Giants were never really given a chance. That’s right, Hue Jackson is now in charge of the Browns.
Jackson’s dismissal from the Raiders led him back to Cincinnati, where he had coached wide receivers, including Chad Ochocinco, from 2004-06.
The 50-year-old Jackson spent the last two seasons as Bengals offensive coordinator.
The Bengals ranked 15th in offensive yards each of the past two seasons and ranked seventh in points scored this season after also ranking 15th in the category in 2014. The Bengals beat the Browns 31-10 and 37-3. Jackson did a tremendous job tutoring Andy Dalton and his play-calling gave the Ravens fits the past couple of seasons. The Browns’ hire comes five days after the Miami Dolphins hired former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase as their head coach.
