Huge crowd watches Tripl;e Crown victor American Pharoah take Haskell Invitational
The brilliant colt could no longer exceed expectations; he could only win or be labeled a disappointment.
American Pharoah is victorious again.
“Our horse keeps better and better”, said Jerry Crawford of Des Moines, who is president of Donegal Racing.
They needn’t have feared. It is also a gift to the tracks that American Pharoah visits.
“That was nerve-racking”, Baffert told NBC afterwards. “And me too. We were both having fun”.
On race day, I awoke regretting that I might miss the prospect to see American Pharoah run, as a result of nothing in sports activities, completely nothing, is extra lovely than seeing horses run.
He is expected to make his farewell racing performance in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky, on October. 31 before retiring to stud.
Travers purse will go from $1.25 million to $1.6 million, according to the NYRA, if it finally manages to showcase the glamor of American Pharoah. We’re not doing it for his reputation.
All eyes were on American Pharoah at the Haskell Invitational Stakes in New Jersey on Sunday, and the three-year-old Triple Crown victor didn’t disappoint.
Alvarez added that American Pharoah’s keen intelligence on top of his extraordinary talent is what helps set him above.
Of the 12 Crown winners, eight have now won in their first race after the Belmont. “It was pretty easy”.
At this point, running American Pharoah against his own generation is nearly unfair.
The 1-9 favorite paid $2.20, $2.10 and 2.10, and topped a $10.80 exacta with second-place finisher Keen Ice. The Triple Crown winner’s biggest threat based on the odds is Upstart, who is 6/1. He seemed to glide over the finish line easily, and it could be argued that Espinoza never really asked him to run to his full potential. But they haven’t. It is still American Pharoah number one, the rest nowhere.
“I couldn’t believe the crowd, how loud it was”, an emotional Baffert said, his voice breaking.
American Pharoah has not been beaten since his career debut at Del Mar 51 weeks ago.
“I bet $50 on him to win the Triple Crown just off the name”, he said.
“It doesn’t make sense running him against older horses right now”, Baffert said.
American Pharoah arrived in New Jersey on Wednesday. It does not appear it will be much of a challenge though, as the older horse division this year is not exceptionally strong. The bomber would be Churchill Downs’ September 26 Lukas Classic, which would have to see its purse rise by, oh, at least $1 million from $175,000. As might American Pharoah himself. His colors, turquoise and yellow, were everywhere.
Everywhere he walked around the track on the New Jersey shore, fans lined up in droves, capturing any glimpse they could get of the superstar.
“They are asking for a picture with us?” says Zayat.
How that would forestall a horse from the fluke of a nasty step, I do not know, however Zayat stated he was extra nervous that his Triple Crown victor would lose and disappoint the followers. Every time I lead him out there I want to feel good about it.. I want to do the right thing for American Pharoah. “It’s incredible what he’s been through (and) is still right there just holding his form”.
A slight nudge by Espinoza gave American Pharoah the cue he needed to show off his blazing speed and cruise home without any urging.
He lives in the sporting zeitgeist for 2015, with fans pitting him against Steph Curry and Serena Williams in athlete-of-the-year debates. Pharoah has already secured his place in history.
Even Secretariat lost, more than once.
Gabriel Saez, who finished sixth in the seven-horse field, said all he tried to do was move up during race, but American Pharoah kept getting smaller and smaller..
