Huge upset in archery as Woo-jin beaten
RIO DE JANEIRO South Korea’s world number one Kim Woo-jin was sent crashing out of the second round of the men’s individual archery at the Rio Olympics on Monday by unheralded Indonesian Riau Ega Agatha, sending shockwaves through the tournament.
He spoke to teammates Ku Bonchan and Lee Seungyun throughout the match, while the U.S. was on the line.
“The past four years I prepared a lot”.
Korea stated its claim to the title in the opening set.
Kim Woo-jin, who dazzled his rivals with a 72-hole world record during the ranking rounds Friday, took maximum points with five of his six arrows. The Olympic gold medal is the third of Ki’s career, and the first for Chang and Choi.
Like the men’s team competition yesterday, the four top seeds from the women’s team archery ranking round – South Korea, Chinese Taipei, the People’s Republic of China, and Russian Federation – received a bye into the quarterfinals and didn’t have to compete this morning.
South Korea wouldn’t be denied, though, placing 15 of its 18 arrows in the top-scoring ring to beat the Americans 6-0 in the gold medal match. “I never thought the Koreans could shoot that great”. When asked what the United States of America could have done differently, he added: “How do I know?” Parker, who won a bronze medal with the USA team in Seoul in 1988 at age 14, competed in two other Olympics and also played basketball for Southern Utah University.
Kim Woojin was the favourite in the men’s individual event at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
With its professional teams and punishing training regimes, the depth of Korean archery is unmatched and the nation will be disappointed if it fails to sweep all four titles at Rio.
