Hugh Freeze takes staunch stance on Confederate flag
“I’m sure that’s something I’m going to get criticized for either way, but at the end of the day you do what you feel is right and you handle whatever comes your way”, Freeze said while meeting with ESPN.com reporters.
A big reason for that improvement: The program’s big-name recruiting class from 2013 that has improved each season.
Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze took the opportunity Thursday at SEC Media days to show his support for the state of Mississippi to move away from the state flag. On Thursday, media picked Ole Miss to finish fifth in the SEC West.
Ole Miss players Laquon Treadwell, Evan Engram, Laremy Tunsil, and Robert Ndkemdiche accompany the Bulldog senior quarterback on the first team. “He even looks a little different”.
“As far as the Laremy situation right now, there’s very little to report”, Freeze said. “I think once it starts threatening, or making other people feel threatened, it should come down”.
The Rebels’ starting left tackle was arrested in June and charged with misdemeanor domestic violence following a fight with his stepfather. I’m very confident in the way we do things and what we can control.
“While I’m not a political figure, I strongly believe it’s time we move in a different direction and change the flag”, Freeze said just before his appearance at media days.
Richt said he’s not anxious about how sophomore tailback Nick Chubb will handle it if the Heisman hype sets in this season, and it is expected to happen.
Chad Kelly, the transfer from Clemson, has jumped onto the scene as a possible signal-caller.
“I applaud our Governor for setting the initiative to remove the flag”, Spurrier said.
“In the late ’90s our university made a move to go away from the Confederate flag and being a Mississippian, no one understands the heritage and the pride any better than I do”, Freeze said.
The NCAA banned Mississippi and South Carolina in 2001 from hosting championship events because of the presence of the Confederate flag in each state’s capitol grounds. A 31-17 win over then No. 4 and rival Mississippi State looked to have the Rebels turned around, but an embarrassing 42-3 loss to TCU in the Peach Bowl has stuck with them throughout the offseason. Suspect Dylann Roof, who had written a racist manifesto, had taken pictures with the Confederate flag among other things.
But the state flag in Mississippi continues to have a pattern of the Confederate flag.
Republican Gov. Phil Bryant has said he respects the 2001 election results, but if the issue is to be reconsidered again, he thinks it should be done by another statewide election rather than by the state’s Legislature.
