Hulu nabs first Golden Globe nomination
Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight” (three nominations) and the Jennifer Lawrence-led “Joy” (two nods) also have yet to be released. “Til then, we’ve got a month to accept the Globes’ oddities for what they are: a double-edged sword with as much power to elevate underdogs as shut out the deserving”. Its Golden Globe nomination represents a big step forward for Hulu, which is hoping to compete with the established original series lineups of Netflix and Amazon.
Just three years after digital platforms plunged into original content television for the first time, Netflix landed a leading eight nominations for its shows and actors, ahead of usually dominant premium cable channel HBO. Now comedy nominations from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association awards are at least respectable (“The Big Short” and “Joy”) or slightly respectable (“Trainwreck” and “Spy”), and actors are (mostly) lauded for the performances for which they’re nominated. “To me, it’s frustrating, but at the same time, I’m just grateful to be getting paid at all for what I do”. And it got an ensemble cast nom at the SAG Awards nominations yesterday but no love at the Globes. Scotland-set Outlander, too, got a more welcome lift, landing nominations both as a series and for lead Catriona Balfe. Among the dramas, only “Mad Max” was an out-and-out blockbuster, though “Spotlight” has been plugging away at the box office. For decades, the fact that the Globes split best-picture nominees between dramas and comedies or musicals has sparked some serious head-scratching.
Bryan Cranston also scored a nomination for his role as blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo in Trumbo, as did Michael Fassbender for is turn as the lead in Steve Jobs, and Will Smith for his role as a doctor in Concussion. While she was a likely nominee for her role as the wife of transgender artist Lili Elbe in “The Danish Girl”, it was quite a surprise to also see her recognized for her supporting performance in Alex Garland’s elegant thriller “Ex Machina”, where she plays the beguiling Artificial Intelligence creation Ava.
The Golden Globes’ acknowledgement that comedies and musicals are as worthy of celebration as Serious Dramas also allows for the inclusion of people like Amy Schumer and Melissa McCarthy-for, as Will Ferrell reminded us at the Oscars a few years back, we all know that a comedian at the Oscars is “the saddest [wo]man of all” (if she’s even invited).
The great Lily Tomlin of Grace and Frankie was nominated for Best Actress in a TV series, Comedy. They are: Todd Haynes, “Carol”; Alejandro G. Inarritu, “The Revenant”; Tom McCarthy, “Spotlight”; George Miller, “Mad Max: Fury Road”; Ridley Scott, “The Martian”. Also surging was Adam McKay’s starry finance farce “The Big Short”, which earned four nominations, including best picture, comedy, and nods for Steve Carell and Christian Bale.
Paul Feig, whose “The Peanuts Movie” was nominated for Best Animated Feature.
The Golden Globe nominees for the best television drama series have been announced in Beverly Hills, California. The series was nominated for a Golden Globe award for best television drama on Thursday, Dec. 10, 2015. And, Orange is the New Black was nominated for Best TV Series, Comedy. They are: “American Crime”, “American Horror Story: Hotel”, “Fargo”, “Flesh and Bone”, and “Wolf Hall”. She tweeted that she probably woke her Manhattan neighbors. But the surprisingly robust showing at the Globes on Thursday morning doesn’t hurt.
Johnny Depp is finished: In 2011, the actor’s widely derided film The Tourist somehow managed to snag Golden Globe nominations for best picture (musical or comedy), best actor for Depp and best actress for co-star Angelina Jolie.
Denzel Washington will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for making an “incredible impact on the world of entertainment”. The Globes have a musical/comedy category, yet mostly ignored films about musicians.
