Human peace sign in Central Park
Thousands of people gathered in Central Park’s East Meadow today as Yoko Ono led an attempt to create the largest-ever human peace sign in commemoration of what would have been John Lennon’s 75th birthday, which is October. 9. Lennon would have turned 75 on Friday.
Rolling Stone, placing “Imagine” at number three in its 2011 list of the 500 greatest songs of all time, called the 1971 track Lennon’s “greatest musical gift to the world”.
More than 2,000 people participated, short of the record, according to media reports. The current record remains at 5,814 people.

Lennon was born in 1940 in Liverpool and rose to fame as co-founder of the Beatles. This band changed the face of pop and rock music for their generation and generations to come. We assembled ourselves into what we hoped would be the largest-ever human peace sign. In 1980, the singer and peace activist was shot at the entrance to his New York apartment block and died of his injuries within minutes.
