Hundreds attend Minneapolis funeral for Jamar Clark as protests continue
“We reiterate that we have zero faith in this police department’s desire to keep our community safe”, said Miski Noor, a Black Lives Matter Minneapolis organizer, according to The New York Times.
Minneapolis police said Tuesday that they arrested three men in connection with the shooting. Authorities said Clark scuffled with officers after he interfered with paramedics working with an assault victim. We appreciate Black Lives Matter for holding it down and keeping the protests peaceful.
Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.
Scarsella, Gustavsson and Backman are white, while Macey is Asian, police said.
The rally is planned for 5 p.m.at the Cincinnati Police Department District 1 headquarters on Ezzard Charles Drive. We agree on the need to examine our policing and criminal justice system, as part of our larger goal to close the racial equity gaps in Minneapolis.
Clark’s family and others urged protesters to suspend demonstrations and on the day of the funeral it was relatively quiet, although the funeral procession was to stop at the precinct en route from the North Minneapolis church to the cemetery. “In the meantime, my thoughts are with Jamar Clark’s family and the injured”.
Armed with signs that called for justice, dozens of protesters marched down Broad Street in North Philadelphia to show they are not happy with policing around the country.
Tuesday’s violent attack on the protesters, carried out by three white men in their 20’s who have since been arrested, have increased the tension in Minneapolis.
The site also has a link to a disturbing video on YouTube posted four days before the shootings in which two masked men make derogatory comments about blacks while supposedly driving to the scene of the protests. They called a news conference to announce that they would “not bow to fear” or “intimidation” after the shootings.
James Hill, Clark’s eldest brother, told the mourners at the Shiloh Temple church on Wednesday that Mayor Betsy Hodges had sent a note expressing her condolences, and apologising for her absence.
His funeral earlier Wednesday attracted hundreds of people.
Speakers thanked the protesters at the 4th Precinct for bringing about change and leading to the release of the names of the officers involved in Clark’s death. Clark’s cousin, Cameron Clark, hobbled into the service on crutches.
Authorities are weighing whether to treat Monday’s shooting as a hate crime, according to sources familiar with the investigation. None of the protesters suffered life-threatening injuries. “We are there until we get justice for Jamar Clark”, she said.
Some at the funeral wore white T-shirts with “I matter” on the front or T-shirts with Clark’s photo, while others were dressed formally.
Activists believe releasing the video to the public is of dire importance. He said it would not settle arguments about whether Clark was handcuffed when police shot him in the head. On Wednesday, Black Lives Matter Minneapolis called for supporters to contact Hennepin County Attorney and demand #nograndjury in the case against the officer who shot Clark.
The scant details known so far: The group of suspects stationed themselves on a sidewalk across from a section of the police station where protesters were, and began filming. Several people, including Sumaya Moallin and Oluchi Omeoga, ran back to the precinct to ask the police for help.
