Hundreds in India protest release of gang rape convict
The student, who succumbed to her injuries two weeks after the attack, was publicly named by her mother on the third anniversary of her death last week, in an effort to end the stigma facing sex attack victims in India.
In a late night time parade yesterday, the DCW chief filed a Special Leave Petition (SLP) within the Supreme Court towards the discharge of the juvenile convict in Nirbhaya gang- rape case.
The juvenile convict in the December 16, 2012 brutal gangrape case will walk free today as all formal documentation work in this regard has been completed.
The juvenile convicted for the 2012 gang rape, along with five other men, is out of the correctional home, Delhi Police said on Sunday. There were massive protests against the release of the convict on Sunday afternoon at Rajpath. Their appeals against hanging are pending in the Supreme Court. She said that the right to protest being silently denied. They stated the juvenile has been stored underneath remark of an NGO underneath safety of Delhi Police. His criminal record has been expunged and new identity will not be revealed, sources said.
“Thus releasing the said respondent without even calling for an assessment of his mental state may be extremely unsafe to the society”, the petition said.
The convict was on Saturday moved to an undisclosed location following a protest outside juvenile reform home.
The case turned a global spotlight on the treatment of women in India, where police say a rape is reported every 20 minutes, and the sentence for the young man sparked debate over whether the country is too soft on youthful offenders. In their order pronounced at 2 am, a vacation bench refused to stay his release, scheduled for Sunday, by giving an urgent hearing and posted the matter for hearing on Monday.
On 16 December, 2012, 23-year-old Jyoti Singh had been beaten up and brutally gangraped by six men in a moving bus in New Delhi.
Four of the other attackers were convicted of rape and murder and are now appealing their death sentences.
Nirbhaya’s father said: “Not only in India but also overseas, people do not want his release, as he had not done the act of a juvenile”.
“The Delhi government is creating drama a day before the release only to turn the mass anger, resulting due to the impending release, in their favour”, said Mr Gupta.
