Hundreds of Black Lives Matter Protestors Gather in Minneapolis Mall

Officials say a total of 12 people were arrested during the Black Lives Matter protest that started at the Mall of America but quickly moved to Minneapolis-St. The Terminal 2 checkpoints have been temporarily shuttered to “prevent protesters from gaining access to secure area”.
Black Lives Matter had called for a day of action in six major USA cities, including San Francisco, where eight protesters were arrested after they briefly walked onto a highway offramp by the worldwide airport.
Protesters took a light-rail train to the airport from the Mall of America, where hundreds of demonstrators initially gathered to draw attention to a recent police shooting of a black man in Minneapolis.
The death of Jamar Clark in a shooting by Minneapolis police has sparked a number of demonstrations in Minnesota, including one occupation outside of the police station during which five demonstrators were shot.
The group says the airport was its main protest target and used the mall disturbance as a decoy. “If I think about an unemployment rate in the African-American community three times the white unemployment rate, that’s disruptive”.
Twelve people were reportedly arrested on charges ranging from trespassing and disorderly conduct, to failure to obey lawful order. No injuries or property damage were reported.
Several people were arrested at the airport, where officials said access to one of two terminals was blocked and causing backups on nearby roads.
The privately owned mall said another demonstration would mean lost sales.
Gov. Mark Dayton said the moving protest created a “very, very risky situation”. She said the retail mecca was the flawless venue for the demonstration to pressure authorities involved in the investigation of Clark’s death to release video footage.

Pictures of the demonstrators on social media showed them holding a sign demanding justice for Mario Woods, a black man shot dead by police who is suspected of a San Francisco stabbing. The rights of such quasi-public places must be balanced with the necessary conversations that we can no longer ignore regarding disparities in the criminal justice system.
The protesters left the mall Wednesday afternoon and were walking toward a light-rail train station outside the massive suburban Minneapolis mall.
Just before last Christmas, more than 1,500 Black Lives Matter protesters shut down part of the same mall as they demonstrated against grand jury decisions not to charge police officers in the killings in Ferguson and NY. A siren announced that the mall was closed and instructed shoppers to “seek shelter”, prompting many stores to close their gates. Mall security guards have also cordoned off parts of a central mall rotunda.
While police and mall security dispersed that gathering, protesters also went to the Minneapolis-St.
Kandace Montgomery, one of three organizers barred by Judge Karen Janisch’s order, said the group wasn’t deterred by the ban.
Mike Griffin, who joined similar protests past year, said his flight to Chicago was among those delayed.
