Hundreds protest release of New Delhi rapist
Police eventually broke up the protests Sunday, removing the demonstrators from central New Delhi in buses.
“We were detained and taken in a bus from India Gate”. The protesters were led by the parents of the woman who was attacked.
Security has been beefed up around India Gate in wake of the proposed protest against the convict’s release.
“Despite the juvenile completing his term in the remand home, Nirbhaya’s family is adamant and asking why are people trying to save a criminal accused of a heinous crime”. Her male friend was beaten and they were both thrown out after the attack.
Referring to the release of the juvenile, she said, “Who should have been put behind bars has been allowed to walk out free, while we, who have suffered, are being chased by the police”.
Mass protests have been held in Delhi following the release of a man involved in the gang rape of a medical student. His police protection was also withdrawn.
Sunday’s developments left Nirbhaya’s father distraught.
Legal challenges failed to prevent the release. “I still appeal to the authorities not to release him as it’s not a good decision for anyone in society”, he said.
The case turned a global spotlight on the treatment of women in India, where police say a rape is reported every 20 minutes, and the sentence sparked debate over whether the country is too soft on young offenders.
The name of the NGO has not been released over fears that their offices could be attacked.
“We don’t want to interfere in the Juvenile Justice Board”, the two judges said in their ruling on Friday.
Asha Devi, the mother of the paramedic student who was gang-raped in a moving bus, had to be persuaded to get inside a police bus along with her husband, Badri Singh Pandey, and other protesters.
Late on Saturday, Swati Maliwal, the head of Delhi Commission of Women, filed a petition to the Supreme Court trying to prevent the release.
“The matter has been posted for hearing on Monday as item number 3”. “Three years have passed since my daughter was raped and murdered”.
“They might have been able to stop the release if they had tried during the day”, the Times of India quoted her as saying. Advocate Kamath said that there are intelligence reports that even during his stay in the provision home, the convict was unremorseful of his action and he has been further radicalised.
