Hungarian camerawoman fired for kicking fleeing migrants
Laszlo tripped a man sprinting with a child in his arms, while another footage showed the TV camerawoman kicking another running child on the Hungary-Serbia border during a police crackdown on refugees.
Petra Laszlo, a camerawoman for the Hungarian N1TV, was filming the refugees as they ran from the police. Laszlo filmed the refugees as they ran, but dropped her camera to kick and trip them. The man can be seen falling down on top of the small child he was holding after she hit him.
Hungary has made frantic and confused efforts to control the huge tide of migrants transiting the country as they try to reach Germany, leaving many trapped for days outside Roszke and furious at their treatment by Hungarian authorities.
N1TV said László had been dismissed due to “unacceptable behavior”.
N1Tv released a statement on their Facebook page on Tuesday saying one of their colleagues behaved unacceptably and their relationship was terminated.
But the channel is known for its anti-refugee sentiment.
Hungary’s government has been vocal against accepting refugees into the European Union, who mostly come from war-torn Syria. Ultra right-wing Prime Minister Viktor Orban has displayed an unapologetic hostility towards the refugees, writing in a recent editorial, “We do not want a large number of Muslims in our country”. Last week, thousands of people were sleeping outside the Budapest train station.
The video was widely shared on social media after it was posted by German reporter Stephan Richter on Twitter, with many condemning Ms Lazlo’s behaviour.
