Hunger Games, Creed succeed at box office

Mockingjay Part 2 also brought in $62 million internationally over the three-day weekend, bringing its global total to $440.7 million.
The other two films, which debuted this weekend itself, “The Good Dinosaur” and Rocky, reboot “Creed” stands at second and third spot respectively. Pixar’s “The Good Dinosaur” had a five day gross of $55 million and a three day weekend gross of $39 million. The $37 million production was directed by Fruitvale Station’s Ryan Coogler and also stars Sylvester Stallone, Tessa Thompson and Phylicia Rashad.
With Mockingjays, dinosaurs and boxers, moviegoers had plenty to feast on at the box office this weekend.
“Creed”, distributed by Time Warner Inc.-owned TWX, -0.74% Warner Bros., brought in $30.1 million in its theatrical debut, and $42.6 million over the course of the extended weekend.
The last Rocky movie was in 2006- “Rocky Balboa”- a good film with good reviews, made $21,851,382 in its first five days. Dinosaur received a solid 77% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and families gave the feature an “A” on CinemaScore.
Critics and audiences have raved about Jordan’s performance as Adonis, son of Rocky Balboa opponent-turned-friend Apollo Creed, who was played by Carl Weathers.
Part 2 is the No. 1 movie in North America, earning an additional $51.6 million during its second weekend in release, Rentrak announced Sunday. It was the top movie for Thanksgiving weekend. Charlie Brown and Snoopy have grossed $116.7 million domestically since the film’s November 6 launch.
“Victor Frankenstein” from Fox joined the list of box-office flops in 2015 with a dismal $2.35M opening across 2,797 locations. The movie, starring Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy, finished significantly lower than projected with only $3.4 million and did not crack the top 10.
With the newcomers staking their claim, Spectre slipped to #4 in its fourth week with $12.8 million. For the balance of the data on the weekend box office totals, click on the link below. And just look at “Hunger Games” in comparison: the final “Mockingjay” will hit $200 million in just shy of two weeks where as after four, “Spectre” has just cracked $175 million at home.
“Spotlight“, the movie staring Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams about the Boston Globe’s investigation of the Catholic Church’s coverup of sexually abusive priests in Boston, earned $4.5 million over three days and $12.3 million since its opening.
