“Hunger Games” Holds Top Box Office Spot
The Good Dinosaur dropped two places this week to number four, but narrowly missed out in rounding off the top three.
Box Office Mojo reports on this past weekend’s box office including the surprising (?) news that Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur fell more than 60% in its second weekend, only the second Pixar film to accomplish that dubious feat (Cars 2 was the first).
According to THR, the final installment, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, and Josh Hutcherson, has made $523.9 million worldwide so far. It was the right film at the right time.
Both movies have earned strong reviews, and first premiered at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. It’s Dougherty’s second feature following “Trick r’ Treat”, a direct-to-video horror film that became a minor cult hit in 2009.
The “Rocky” sequel “Creed” was just a hair behind, in third place with a $15.5 million gate. Still, it does provide us with something we don’t usually see during the post-Thanksgiving date on the calendar – success. Off 58%, the Daniel Craig film has earned $184.5 million in domestic sales and an additional $607 million from foreign markets.
“Spectre” took fifth position with $5.4 million. Spotlight grossed $2.9-M from 980 theaters for a domestic box office take of $16.6-M, followed by Brooklyn with $2.4-M from 906 locations for a take of $11.2-M. Krampus, $16.0 million ($3.3 million international).3. The CGI-animated adaptation of the comic strip characters has now grossed $121.4 million domestically and $134.7 million worldwide. Mockingjay Part 1 brought the series back to earth somewhat, with $337 million domestic and $418 million overseas. The budget was $99 million. It earned $1.2 million over 305 screens and is being distributed by Roadside Attractions. The ensemble drama has held the #8 spot for three weeks now and was down just 34%; it should be able to continue this momentum as it picks up awards buzz. The Good Dinosaur, $15.5 million ($19.4 million international).5.
Every year there are a few weekends that studios avoid at all costs and last weekend is typically one of them. Where available, the latest global numbers for Friday through Sunday are also included.
