Hurricane Danny Weakens, Downgraded To Category 2 Storm
As of the latest advisory from the NHC, Danny poses no immediate threat to land.
Hurricane Danny was losing steam on Saturday morning while tropical storm watches were issued for islands in the Caribbean.
Forecasters expected Danny to be a tropical storm by then.
The U.S. Air Force Reserve and NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft are scheduled to investigate Danny Saturday afternoon.
With that said, Danny, as it impacts some of the islands in the northern Caribbean Sea may actually become a depression or even just an open wave.
Earlier this month, experts predicted that there would be, at most, one major hurricane during the 2015 Atlantic hurricane season.
The center said hurricane-force winds extended only 15 miles from the center of the storm.
Danny is expected to reach Puerto Rico as a tropical storm by Tuesday and Hispaniola by Wednesday.
The hurricane is centered about 930 miles east of the Leeward Islands and is moving west-northwest near 10 mph.
As Hurricane Danny briefly surged to a Category 3 storm Friday before downgrading a Category 2 overnight, it headed toward Caribbean islands gripped by drought, where emergency officials started preparing for the possibility of flash floods and mudslides.
He said that after 48 hours, Danny will continue to weaken as it moves near or over the Greater Antilles, where it will approach an upper level trough of low pressure.
Tiny Hurricane Danny strengthened on its path across the Atlantic and may reach the Leeward Islands sometime Monday. While the storm doesn’t look very hurricane-like on satellite, the deep thunderstorm activity has grown in size and the circulation has strengthened – a trend that will continue into next week.
The regional airline, LIAT, has announced the cancellation of more than 25 flights over the next three days as the Leeward Islands prepare for the passage of Hurricane Danny.
