Husker Gameday: Nebraska vs. Rutgers Kickoff 2:30 pm CT
Fourth Quarter (NU 31-14)NU 14:50 – Brown 44 kick.
In an incredibly predictable game, Rutgers was dominated by the Nebraska Cornhuskers to the tune of 31-14.
Coming off a win over previously undefeated MI State, Nebraska (4-6, 2-4 Big Ten) will visit High Point Solutions Stadium for the first time to face Rutgers (3-6, 1-5) on Saturday.
“It feels good and I know the players feel good about that, ” Cornhuskers coach Mike Riley said. The play was defended well by the Big Red and went to the locker room up 14.
“We’d played a lot of good football, and there’s no doubt about it”, Riley said.
“It’s just another opportunity for us to go show what the 2015 Huskers are all about, ” safety Nate Gerry said. Armstrong finished 19-33 for 320 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Embattled Rutgers coach Kyle Flood is in his fourth year with questions whether he’ll get a fifth following a season that has featured player dismissals and a three-game suspension for contacting a professor about a player’s grade.
Before the clock hit triple zeroes, a scary moment took place between two of Rutgers’ starting offensive linemen. He had to be carted off the field and was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital for evaluation. Flood said after the game that Nelson had full movement in his extremities, but teammates understandably were still shaken up by the incident.
“I think everyone in the program is frustrated, ” Floor said. You want to focus on one game at a time to get to where we want to go.
“We’re all human. We’re going to talk about it, but our main focus is to be 1-0”.
“We got the jitters out”, Williams said. “We’re not pleased with how we played tonight”.
In the third quarter, the teams traded possessions before Rutgers got the ball and Chris Laviano connected with Leonte Carroo on an incredible catch to the 5 yard line.
The third quarter continued rough for Armstrong, who threw his third interception on Nebraska’s first possession of the second half.
Armstrong’s third and final pick came midway through the third quarter and set Rutgers up with a chance to cut the lead to seven.
On the field, another lackadaisical start doomed Rutgers, which generated only two yards of offense by the time Nebraska had its second touchdown. Tight end Cethan Carter added a career-high 89 all-purpose yards, opening the scoring with a 32-yard end-around for a touchdown and adding an all-important 11-yard score later on. Lining up as an H-back on the right side, the tight end ran behind his line, took an inside handoff from Armstrong and was not touched circling the left side for a score.
Nebraska played very well in the first 20 minutes.
Armstrong, who returned to the lineup last week after missing the Purdue game with a foot injury, took over from there. His first was a 15-yard bullet over the middle between four Rutger defenders to Jordan Westerkamp. He extended the margin early in the second quarter by rolling right to elude pressure and rainbowing a 44-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Moore to a three-touchdown lead.
Rutgers (3-7, 1-6) pulled within a touchdown by converting an Armstrong interception into a touchdown – a 5-yard pass from wide receiver Javarion Grant to quarterback Chris Laviano.
