Hyundai Ioniq teased again as Hyundai’s answer to the Toyota Prius
We know that self-driving cars are all the rage now, but it’s going to take a while until the hit the market and even when that happens the chances of buyers being numerous are quite slim, as the cars will probably be pretty expensive.
Designs aside, the IONIQ will be coming out with several green powertrain options.
The promise includes “head-turning good-looks” as well as class-leading aerodynamics, with a very slippery shape that Hyundai imply has some form of active aerodynamics in the front to direct air flow. The color of the vehicle is chosen to evoke fog that is ready to rise.
Inside, designers strived for a smooth, simple, clutter-free feel, Hyundai said. Our previous spy shots reveal a small array of buttons and knobs will be positioned just below the screen to switch between key functions like media source, navigation, and phone pairing, while HVAC controls will populate the lower space of the console.
Following a world premiere in Korea in January, the IONIQ is due to be shown during March 2016 at the Geneva International Motor Show and the New York Auto Show. Speaking of the exterior, it supposedly reduces aerodynamic drag, while the interior features “environmentally-friendly” materials, making the vehicle ultra-enticing for those of you who love saving planet Earth. The second part of the name references the unique offering it brings to the Hyundai range, demonstrating the brand’s environmental commitment and willingness to maximize choice for its customers.
The Toyota Prius has gone largely unchallenged in the mainstream hybrid arena for much of its life, but the Hyundai Ioniq aims to give it a run for its money. Alongside the electric version, consumers will also be able pick up electric-gasoline and plug-in hybrids. Hyundai has already confirmed that the IONIQ will be the first vehicle in the world where consumers can choose between PHEV, EV and Hybrid.
