‘I absolutely hate Adam Johnson now’, girl tells jury
Appearing via video-link, the girl told Bradford Crown Court about the sex acts that allegedly took place when she was 15 years old and the impact since then.
Johnson, of Castle Eden, County Durham, admitted to meeting the teenager after sexual grooming and sexual activity involving kissing last week ahead of the trial at Bradford Crown Court but the former winger denies two further charges of sexual activity which the prosecution has said are “more serious”.
Orlando Pownall QC, defending Johnson, asked the girl whether she “absolutely hated” Johnson now.
She said: “I am not trying to protect him now”.
The jury was also played a second police interview during which the teenager described more serious sexual activity, including how she performed a sex act on Johnson during the second meeting in his auto.
“‘I thought that when I told him my age he would have backed off. Who just asks for a random fan’s number?” As any 15-year-old girl would.
Prosecuting Kate Blackwell QC asked the girl: “How did that make you feel?”
The girl sobbed as she explained what she had told her friends about what happened and Judge Jonathan Rose adjourned the case for the day. “He asked me when I was 16”, she said.
Just before the girl broke down, she told the barrister: “At the time I didn’t realise it was wrong”.
The girl replied: “Yes he did I’m not lying about it the only person who has lied through this is him”.
“After everything he put me through, he told everyone he was innocent and he made me out to be a liar”.
The teenager told the officer that Johnson knew how old she was.
“Then he was asking me to meet up with him and get his shirt and he said he wanted a thank you for his shirt and so we met up again and we did stuff and then he is picking me up again this week and I am riding him”.
“I was a stupid little girl”. She said she did this to prove to people that she had met the footballer. “He let people cheer him on in matches and he let people call me all the names under the sun”. “I wasn’t bothered about myself in it all”.
Mr Pownall asked the girl about the messages exchanged between her and Johnson in December 2014, before they first met in his vehicle. “I didn’t want to get him in more trouble than he was”.
“He knows for a fact he did it to me. I was anxious people wouldn’t believe me”.
The prosecution accused Johnson of abusing “his revered position in society” when he had sexual contact with the teenager “in a way that he knew was both morally and legally wrong”.
(Later they continue) Johnson: Am I only getting a kiss?
Mr Pownall said: “You didn’t think that though did you?”
