‘I Feel Pretty’ Directors Say They Were ‘Disappointed’ After Backlash From Trailer
It’s basically the Tom Hanks movie Big for girls (Schumer’s character watches that pic alone one night), carrying the message that you shouldn’t deny who you are but rather embrace it for all it’s worth. The New York Post said Schumer dealt “another blow to feminism” with the movie. Even if Renee didn’t have a magical head injury, why would it be amusing that she’s confident about having sex with a nice guy like Ethan who’s clearly into her?
“In the scene after the head injury, the assumption is that the woman I see when I look in the mirror is skinny, but I’m just seeing my same self and perceiving my body as attractive”, Schumer told Vulture.
The movie’s trailer alone sparked criticism of the plot.
AMY SCHUMER: “I said, ‘Do not retouch me in this movie”. I think people do that for everything. We see it in the impossibly handsome Mallory (played by real-life beauty icon Emily Ratajkowski), who is nearly imprisoned by her “perfect” looks. “That pre-judgment is just that-a pre-judgment”.
“There’s all this backlash, and I wasn’t sifting through all the comments”, she explained. “Everybody really responded to that of me feeling good and really wanting to bring it”.
The word is still out on how body-positive “I Feel Pretty”, which premieres on April 20, actually is. It was written for me to just stand there and pose, and I said, ‘No.
But also, I Feel Pretty is for anyone who needs to be reminded that they are “enough”. “Is this body-shaming?'”
On Friday, I Feel Pretty opens, hoping to be yet another feather in Schumer’s cap. After Kohn shared a three-sentence pitch with Silverstein, they completed the script the following year.
Writer/directors Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein (Never Been Kissed) wisely don’t make Renee’s imaginary makeover a supernatural feat, as most movies would. “Nothing has changed because it doesn’t have to”. Ethan begun as unsure about the relationship, but grew affectionate towards Renee because of her boldness and fearlessness as a result of her confidence.
“She’s the product of believing all the marketing”. The people there will let you know if you’re amusing or not.
Renee (Amy Schumer) loves working the desk. “We would have felt less comfortable handing this off to someone else”.
“She has a great life, she’s just not seeing it”.
“I learned a couple of years ago that I don’t want to be reaching for some other version of myself”, she says. Press play to see our interview. When that happened I was like, ‘Oh, that’s really interesting. “She allows us to go on that journey with her”. Amy Schumer was just in town with co-star, Aidy Bryant. The pair spoke with Newsweek about the initial wave of backlash “I Feel Pretty” received after its trailer debuted in February.
