I got Union Leader newspaper removed from debate
Real-estate tycoon Donald Trump had an atypical heckler during a Monday rally in New Hampshire.
The Union Leader and ABC News have split because the newspaper has endorsed one of the candidates in the Republican race, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, creating what Trump called a conflict of interest in co-sponsoring a February 6 debate in the state.
ABC News’ decision to drop the Union Leader from the Republican debate follows a similar incident before their Democratic debate last month.
Donald Trump immediately took credit for getting the New Hampshire Union Leader dropped from an upcoming Republican debate being produced in partnership with ABC News, drawing condemnation from the paper’s publisher.
McQuaid hasn’t backed down, continuing to criticize Trump in the Union Leader’s pages.
The endorsement and editorial sparked fierce attacks from Trump, who says the paper is “dying” and has a horrendous track record when it came to choosing winning candidates.
“We will get over being ‘severed, ‘” McQuaid said in a written statement. “We have been doing both for many years and it has never been a problem with ABC or other debate sponsors”, McQuaid said. While Union Leader did not respond to Trump’s bragging, they did respond to ABC that they were “amused” that the axe fell when it became apparent how they “write editorials and endorse candidates” as they have for decades. He described ABC as “spineless”.
The debate, scheduled for February 6, is scheduled to take place three days before the first-in-the-nation primary in New Hampshire.
