“I want To Win Games” Pep Guardiola Insists Following Embarrassing Loss
Pep Guardiola claims his tactical system and the Manchester City players are not to blame for the team’s failure to convince in recent weeks after losing 4-2 at Leicester City on Saturday.
It was Leicester’s first Premier League win since October and took Claudio Ranieri’s team four points clear of the relegation zone.
City failed to win a tackle in the first 35 minutes but Guardiola sought to downplay the statistic.
“We concede few goals in my career as a coach, and here I can not do that, and I have to analyse why”, he said in his post-match press conference. The worst thing is when you train and you don’t get the result because when you win you say “ok, I got the result”, but when you lose, you say “I want to win now and have to get good results”.
“To change the mentality, to change what we want, maybe it will take a little more time”.
“You have to win the duels, that is true”. Two late City goals put a gloss on the score line.
As a result they have slipped to fourth in the Premier League, seven points behind leaders Chelsea.
Despite his problems, Guardiola said he will not betray his attacking style. “I have to accept the opinions of former players, the media and fans, because we did not win”.
“Four minutes, 2-0, is not easy”, Guardiola told BT Sport. We tried until the end. “Here I can not do that and I have to analyze why”.
“Of course I have to adapt but that doesn’t mean I change the way I believe”. Just 15 games into the Premier League season, it’s obvious that Guariola was right to think as much.
Their domestic troubles have been in stark contrast to an impressive Champions League campaign which has seen them make the last 16.
“No matter who’s playing, no matter how many chances we have, we should be able to give 100 percent and today I don’t have the feeling we did”.
Leicester were the surprise team of last season by winning the title with their new manager Claudio Ranieri in charge.
In defence, centre-backs John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi have looked baffled by what Guardiola asks of them and, while that doesn’t reflect well on the players, it is also a manager’s job to extract maximum performance from the tools at his disposal. No, no, no. I am a guy who never complains about what happened in the past, and if I didn’t like the situation I wouldn’t have come here.
Ranieri, though, says he was never anxious. They opened the scoring after Robert Huth powered a header forward and Riyad Mahrez helped it on with a delicious flick to Islam Slimani, who threaded a nice pass through to Vardy.
The victory, which also featured a goal for old favourite Andy King, offered the tantalising prospect that Leicester could now go on and produce the sort of performances they had hitherto saved largely for Champions League nights.
