I will not resign as Manchester United coach – Van Gaal
Manchester United’s winless run continued but they gave under-fire coach Louis van Gaal crumbs of cheer with a committed display in an entertaining 0-0 draw with Chelsea while Arsenal went top of the table on Monday. It gives a lot of hope for the fans. “That is what we are asking and automatically, when everyone is on board, hopefully we can use the quality of the players as well”. [We] created a lot of chances. But the way they played against Stoke away from home was just not United, not the United I know.
United got their own chance of keeping all three points when a late opportunity fell to the captain, Wayne Rooney, but he could barely get his feet on the ball, thereby leaving Courtois to bring the ball safely into his body.
Ferdinand believes if Van Gaal can replicate the squad’s performance against the Blues heading into the future, he should be given more time to prove himself. The Dutchman insisted that he meant to see out the last 18 months of his contract, clarifying remarks following the defeat by Stoke City last weekend.
Van Gaal’s position still looks precarious, despite ending a sequence of four successive defeats.
‘Will I resign? On the contrary, ‘ he said. I have a contract, so it is not a question of me staying.
“In my first year as a manager, it was much tougher, they were yelling every week against me, and then I won in my first year the Uefa Cup”.
“The crowd were excellent today and you could see how much it meant to the players”.
“I can only work with my players”.
“I can not have any influence on that”, he said. But I am fully confident in the board and more importantly in my players.
When it can happen to Jose Mourinho it can happen to me.
“The environment is making the crisis”. My relationship with players, board and staff members is very good. However, Van Gaal seems up for the fight, and vows to right the sinking ship. [There were] two times at the post when the goalkeeper was beaten. “It is more hard, because I am also part of the four matches we have lost so people are looking at me and I have to deal with that”. “That is my analysis”.
On the flipside, Chelsea interim manager Guus Hiddink is satisfied with Chelsea’s draw at Manchester United.
“The players are willing to fight for every metre”. They have to lift it up and that’s what we have talked about in the locker room.
This was a performance that United can be proud of, but this season’s failing in their lack of firepower was prevalent once again. The team showed progression, which was good.
