IAAF announces rest of 5-person panel that will monitor Russias anti-doping
Doping is not just Russia’s problem, it is relevant for the whole world; however, responsibility for doping could be significantly toughened, if need be, he said.
World athletics’ ruling body the IAAF on Friday provisionally suspended ARAF from worldwide competition over claims of state-sponsored doping revealed in a shocking report by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) commission.
World champion hurdler Sergei Shubenkov – the 25-year-old son of prominent Soviet heptathlete Natalya Shubenkova – deplored he could relive his mother’s exclusion from the 1984 Los Angeles Games, which the Soviet Union boycotted.
Similarly, several Russian track and field coaches, agents and officials are being fired until they can clean up their own mess.
However, he believes it doesn’t have enough time to get its house in order before the Rio Olympics in August next year. Russian authorities said WADA itself asked them to destroy them.
Coe said: “After consultation with WADA, we will set the verification criteria”. If needed, we will clean up this federation completely.
“Some may suffer in this situation, but we will remove all those whose reputation is under suspicion from the athletics management system”, Mutko said on the state television channel Rossiya 24.
Fallout from the WADA Independent Commission report into allegations of widespread doping, corruption and collusion in Russian athletics will dominate the agenda when WADA’s executive committee and foundation board meet on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced in June his deep disappointment with the rise of positive doping cases registered among Russian athletes and urged to enhance the fight against the abuse of performance enhancing drugs. Our proposal to the Russian Olympic committee…is to have our “clean” sportsmen taking part in other competitions while our participation at Rio is suspended for the time being.
A few Russian athletes have already suggested they could compete at the 2016 Olympics as independents under the Olympic flag.
“Our job right now is to focus on the work that needs to be done to make ARAF compliant with the IAAF and, together with WADA, compliant for re-entry into global competition”, an IAAF statement read.
“I think with the decision on Friday night Sebastian Coe has shown good leadership”, Bach said.
“What can I do now, or what could I have done, for this decision not to have been made?”
